If you're in pain or something doesn't look right, call us. When in doubt, it's always better to be seen. Here are the most common emergencies we treat at our Mentor, OH office:
Sudden or worsening tooth pain — especially with swelling, fever, or sensitivity to hot and cold — can signal infection or nerve damage. Don't tough it out. Call us.
Time is critical. Keep the tooth moist (milk or saliva works), avoid touching the root, and call us immediately. Teeth successfully reimplanted within 30–60 minutes can often be saved.
A cracked or broken tooth can expose sensitive inner tissue to bacteria. Rinse gently, apply a cold compress for swelling, and come in as soon as possible.
A missing crown or filling leaves your tooth vulnerable. We can often replace or recement it the same day — call to get an appointment before bacteria get in.
A dental abscess is a serious infection that can spread. If you notice swelling in your face, jaw, or gums — especially with fever — call us or go to an ER immediately.
Cuts or lacerations to the lips, cheeks, gums, or tongue that won't stop bleeding need prompt attention. Apply pressure and call us or visit an ER if severe.
When you're in pain, the last thing you want is to be put on hold or told to wait a week. At Grand River Dental, we reserve time every day for urgent and same-day appointments. We're located conveniently on Mentor Ave and accept most major insurance plans.
While you're waiting to be seen, here's how to manage the most common dental emergencies.
Call (440) 219-2889 immediately. We'll assess the situation over the phone, give you first-aid guidance, and schedule you as quickly as possible — usually the same day.
Over-the-counter ibuprofen (Advil) reduces both pain and inflammation. Apply a cold compress to your face for swelling. Avoid aspirin directly on the tooth or gums.
If a crown falls off, dental wax or sugarless gum can temporarily cover the tooth. For a knocked-out tooth, keep it moist. Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water.

Yes. We reserve time every day for same-day and urgent appointments. Call us at (440) 219-2889 and we'll do our best to get you in the same day you call — often within a few hours.
Pick up the tooth by the crown (top), not the root. Rinse it gently without scrubbing. Try to reinsert it in the socket, or keep it moist in milk or between your cheek and gum. Call us immediately — a knocked-out tooth has the best chance of survival within 30–60 minutes.
A toothache with swelling, fever, or pus is a dental emergency — it may indicate an abscess, which is a serious infection. A minor ache can often wait a day or two, but if it's severe or worsening, call us right away.
Most dental insurance plans cover some portion of emergency care. Grand River Dental accepts most major insurance plans and always reviews your coverage and explains costs before starting treatment. We also offer CareCredit financing for patients without coverage.
We're open Monday–Thursday 8am–6pm, Friday 8am–5pm, and Saturday 9am–2pm. For urgent situations outside these hours, call us and leave a message — we check messages for emergencies and will call you back.
